Position Details

General Statement

The Student Life Coordinator (SLC) position is responsible for the administration, supervision, programming initiatives and student conduct for all MSU-Northern students. This includes two traditional residence halls and student family housing. Responsibilities include the supervision of student staff, facilities management, educational and social programming, conflict management, conduct hearing officer, management of housing operations, and on-call emergency response. The Student Life Coordinator is a professional who models scholarship, community engagement, and professionalism and who enjoys living and working with university students.

Duties and Responsibilities

1. Oversee the health and safety of all residents and the daily operation of all residential facilities
2. Supervise, train, evaluate and select student staff. Develop and advise
i. Residence Hall Association (RHA) ii. Student Family Housing Association (SFHA) iii. Commuter Student Association (CSA)
3. Provide direction and coordination for all university community development activities
4. Serve as first level of contact for all resident concerns
5. Serve as primary conduct hearing officer
6. Ensure appropriate sanctions are carried out in a timely manner.
7. Maintain accurate student conduct records
8. Interpret and enforce all University, student life, and residence life policies and procedures governing student conduct
9. Oversee all administrative processes (i.e.: opening/closing procedures, room changes, room selection process, educational and social programming, RA & desk duty, and occupancy reports),
10. Respond to emergency and crisis situations
11. Ensure appropriate supervision and coverage of student life housing facilities during non-business hours including weekends and holidays
12. Coordinate with custodial and maintenance staff to ensure repairs and maintenance issues are reported and completed in a timely manner
13. Routinely inspect housing facilities
14. Create, support, and advise student organizations as needed/requested
15. Confer regularly with immediate supervisor to achieve departmental goals
16. Work closely with Student Union Building administrative assistant regarding housing assignments, room changes, billing, etc.
17. Coordinate summer programs and camps that use residential areas
18. Serve on University committees as needed
19. Live in an on-campus apartment as assigned by the Dean of Students

Required Qualifications – Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills

1. Bachelors degree required.
2. 1 year experience in residence life, student housing, and student development, which included living on-campus
3. Demonstrated understanding of student development issues in post-secondary education
4. Demonstrated computer literacy with a basic understanding of word processing, spreadsheet and database programs
5. Demonstrated ability to properly handle confidential information

Preferred Qualifications – Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills

1. Master’s degree. Preferred fields of study include College Student Personnel Services, Student Affairs, Higher Education Administration, Educational Leadership, Counseling, or related field
2. Demonstrated flexibility to work in an ever changing environment
3. Demonstrated willingness to work flexible hours
4. Demonstrated sound management and organizational skills.
5. Demonstrated ability and willingness to work collaboratively with students, faculty, and staff
6. Demonstrated ability to properly handle confidential information
7. Demonstrated commitment to student development and learning
8. Demonstrated Experience in using Maxient
9. Demonstrated experience as a conduct hearing officer
10. Demonstrated supervisory experience
11. Demonstrated student organization advising
12. Demonstrated Student Life Programming experience

Special Requirements
Physical Demands

1. May need to lift up to 30 lbs.
2. May need to assist with snow removal around housing facilities
3. May be exposed to cleaning agents and blood borne pathogens
