Brief Position Overview

Under the supervision of the grant’s principle investigator and the Chancellor, the Director of Indian Education/Tribal Liaison/Special Advisor to the Chancellor under the NASNTI Grant will be the primary source for faculty and staff professional development related to Indian Education with a specific focus on culturally responsive pedagogy, curriculum development, and the Montana Indian Education for All Act. The Director will centralize and coordinate all activities related to American Indian students and communities. The Director will address and help foster a culturally responsive environment at MSUN.

Position Details

General Statement

The US DOE NASNTI program provides grants and other assistance to non-tribal institutions that serve American Indians in order to enable the institutions to improve and expand their capacity to serve these students. The funds from this grant will be used to improve retention and increase the American Indian students’ completion rate of a bachelor’s degree. The primary strategy is to develop and implement culturally appropriate models and strategies of mentoring, tutoring, teaching, and socially engaging American Indian students.

Duties and Responsibilities

1) Provide professional development on behalf of the Little River Institute to MSU-Northern faculty and staff related to Indian Education with a specific focus on:
• Culturally Responsive Pedagogy (faculty)
• Culturally Responsive Curriculum Development (faculty/administration)
• Culturally Responsive Office Practices (staff)
• Montana’s Indian Education for All Act (MCA 20-1-501)
2) Co-Organize and facilitate the NASNTI Grant/Little River Institute’s annual Indigenous Education Conference
3) Co-Organize and facilitate the NASNTI Grant/Little River Institute cultural awareness activities for new student orientation, American Indian Heritage Day/Week in September, and Native American Heritage Month in November each year.
4) Lead MSU-Northern’s outreach efforts to Montana Tribes including, but not limited to:
• Tribal Governments
• Tribal Enterprises
• K-12 Schools
• Tribal Colleges
5) Facilitate communication between MSU-Northern and Tribal entities by providing follow-up to recommendations received
6) Provide leadership to initiatives responsive to tribal input and needs
7) Coordinate and centralize all activities at MSU-Northern related to American Indian students and their communities including, but not limited to:
• American Indian Advisory Board to the Chancellor
• American Indian Advisory Board to the NASNTI grant
• American Indian Advisory Council to the Provost
• Memorandum’s of Understanding with Montana Tribes
• Articulation agreements with Montana Tribal Colleges
8) Work closely with Little River Institute and campus staff and faculty to promote recruitment, retention and completion of MSU-Northern’s American Indian students
9) Represent the program to the campus and community; maintain liaisons and collaborations between the NASNTI project and academic departments, libraries, administrative departments, student organizations, students, faculty, and the college community at large
10) Work under NASNTI grant PI and Chancellor Supervision to track and assess grant activities and objectives; assist with grant reporting; facilitate relationships with Montana tribes.

Required Qualifications – Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills

1) Master’s degree in education

Preferred Qualifications – Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills

1) Doctoral degree in education (ABD considered)
2) Adequate knowledge of current K-12 and higher education policies and best practices as well as comprehensive student support programs
3) Experience providing professional development on cultural responsiveness as it relates to education of American Indian students
4) Demonstrated knowledge of Montana Tribal Nations and their cultures
5) Demonstrated knowledge of Montana’s constitutional mandate regarding “the distinct and unique cultural heritage of American Indians and to be committed in its educational goals to the preservation of their cultural heritage” and Montana’s subsequent Indian Education for All Act (MCA 20-1-501)
6) Record of progressively responsible experience in leadership roles within K-12 and post-secondary education
7) Demonstrated knowledge of tribal sovereignty
8) Excellent problem solving and communication skills
9) Excellent organizational and collaborative skills
10) Ability to adapt to changing environments
