Position Details

General Statement

The purpose of this position is to provide custodial and minor building complex repairs as well as take care of nearby campus grounds in a clean, safe, and aesthetic manner. All duties and responsibilities are completed according to established protocol.

Duties and Responsibilities

1. Custodial — Clean building floors by sweeping, mopping, scrubbing, or vacuuming. Strip, polish, and wax floors within a building according to established schedule. Clean windows. Gather and empty trash. Service, clean, and supply restrooms.
2. Maintenance — Perform minor repairs and upkeep as requested, such as painting and hardware repair. Change light bulbs.
3. Outside duties – Maintain the immediate outside area of building in clean safe, and aesthetically appealing manner. Report any unsafe conditions such as broken benches. Provide snow removal outside immediate building as needed to provide safe entry and exit.
4. Security – Monitor building security and safety by performing such tasks as locking doors and windows, turning out lights, checking for and reporting maintenance problems, and reporting hazardous situations, and obtaining assistance for distressed people.
5. Interact with campus community and general public. Perform project work with teams. Communicate with Dean of Students Office. Aid and direct building users.

Required Qualifications – Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills

1. Demonstrated knowledge of standard methods for scrubbing, disinfecting, mopping, dusting, polishing and related tasks.
2. Demonstrated knowledge of use of chemicals and custodial services.
3. Demonstrated working knowledge of use of specialized techniques and procedures for deep cleaning and major refurbishing.
4. Ability and skill in the operation of simple hand tools (squeegees, brooms, mops, dustwands, and brushes) and in the operations of power cleaning equipment (regular high-speed buffers and burnishers, wet/dry vacs, shampooers, steam extraction equipment, exterior window washing equipment, and power brooms).
5. Demonstrated knowledge of workplace safety practices.
6. Skill in mixing compounds according to instructions for special projects.
7. Demonstrated ability to read and understand Material Safety Data Sheets.
8. Demonstrated ability to perform minor maintenance work and painting.

Physical Demands

1. Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs (typically represents the weight of equipment and boxes of supplies).
2. Considerable use of hands, arms, climbing, lifting, walking, and handling of materials.
3. Limited work outside during cold weather such as snow removal from building entry areas.
