Montana State University Northern seeks an experienced, hands-on Director of Human Resources to provide effective leadership in all areas of campus HR core functions. This position reports to the Chancellor and serves as a member of the Executive Team.

Position Details

General Statement

The HR Director works collaboratively with over 200 regular employees and over 150 student workers to provide guidance and direction in all areas of human resources.

Duties and Responsibilities

Works with a variety of employee issues and concerns including conflict resolution, progressive disciplinary action, and performance improvement plans;

Recruits for all new employees including faculty, administrators, professional, and classified staff including selection procedures and recommendations;

Determines position classifications;

Prepares statistical reports for Federal EEO guidelines;

Oversees MSUN Affirmative Action plan;

Administers employee benefits;

Maintains personnel files for all classified employees;

Provides union contract interpretations and serves on union negotiation teams for both MEA-MFT (faculty union) and the AFSCME (classified union);

Prepares various confidential reports dealing with matters concerning sexual harassment, grievance proceedings, and other human resources issues of a sensitive and confidential nature;

Monitors and works within state/federal labor laws.

Prepares and administers all campus HR policies and procedures.

Serves as the Title IX Coordinator.

Required Qualifications – Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills

Bachelor’s Degree in Human Resources Management, Business, or related field.

Minimum of 5 years human resources experience in three or more of the following areas: labor relations, compensation and benefits, recruiting, strategic planning, professional development, compliance, policy development, and change management.

Previous experience working with unions.

Demonstrated leadership experience.

Preferred Qualifications – Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills

Master’s Degree in Human Resources Management, Business, or related field.

SPHR or other HR certification.

Experience working in a university environment.

Experience working with an ATS (applicant tracking system).

Supervisory experience.

The Successful Candidate Will

have a wide-breadth of experience in all areas of HR, including change management, strategic planning, professional development, employee relations, engagement, compliance, policy development, compensation and benefits.

have progressive leadership experience in an organization.
