Position Details

General Statement

The Counselor supports the University’s efforts to provide a safe, healthy, and accessible environment for all students. The Counselor provides services for an increasingly diverse student body – educating them in ways to develop personally, educationally, and vocationally, as well as to enhance their overall well-being. The Counselor works collaboratively with the Director of Student Health and Wellness and medical providers in the development and maintenance of a comprehensive, holistic wellness center. The counselor provides specific, direct services to include: brief, short-term individual, group, and couples counseling (accounting for 70% of position duties); crisis intervention, campus mental health outreach and program development, and serving as a resource liaison to other campus and community partners (accounting for 30% of position duties).

Duties and Responsibilities

1. Provide culturally informed mental health care to individual undergraduate and graduate students, groups, and communities within the University to improve mental health
2. Develop and implement educational and outreach programs for the University community
3. Assess mental health needs of the University Community
4. Provide consultation regarding mental health issues to broader campus community
5. Provide counseling, crisis intervention, and overall clinical outreach and educational services to the University student community
6. Provide crisis response and intervention
7. Provide intake assessment and treatment planning
8. Provide appropriate case management and record keeping
9. Employ professional accepted and empirically supported best practice services
10. Help students define goals, plan action, and gain insight into their personal development
11. Serve on University committees as needed

Required Qualifications – Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills

1. Master’s Degree in Counseling or Social Work
2. Appropriate Licensure as mental health counselor in Montana, or ability to be licensed as mental health counselor in Montana
3. 1 year of experience in mental health counseling, assessment, and program development
4. Demonstrated understanding of mental health challenges and issues among college students

Preferred Qualifications – Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills

1. Demonstrated experience in program development and delivery
2. Demonstrated experience in a college or university mental health facility
3. Demonstrated flexibility and willingness to work in an ever changing environment
4. Demonstrated sound management and organizational skills
5. Demonstrated ability and willingness to work collaboratively with students, faculty, and staff
6. Demonstrated ability to properly handle confidential information
7. Demonstrated literacy and proficiency with Microsoft Office Applications
