Position Details

General Statement

MSU-Northern offers a Certificate of Applied Science in Welding as well as an Associate of Applied Science in Manufacturing. The Welding program is an intense, hands-on program intended to prepare a student for a career in welding – in construction, metal fabrication, equipment repair or any other industry that requires certified welding professionals.

Duties and Responsibilities

Instruct students in the major welding and cutting processes including OAC (oxy-acetylene cutting), SMAW (Shielded Metal Arc Welding), FCAW (Flux core Arc Welding), GMAW (Gas Metal Arc Welding), and GTAW (Gas Tungsten Arc Welding), as well as material preparation, testing, fit-up and production welding. Effective teaching is the primary mission of this position and MSU-Northern. This position will teach approximately 24 semester credit hours of lecture/laboratory courses per academic year. Other duties will include student advising, academic committee assignments, program development, student recruitment, industry training, and fostering of industry partnerships. Experience in machining and CNC processes is greatly desired.

Required Qualifications – Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills

Required Qualifications:
Associate of Applied Science degree in a related technical field
AWS certification/qualification in routine processes
Background and/or experience in metal fabrication
Proven teaching experience in both a college-level classroom and college-level hands-on lab
Demonstrated instructional experience with syllabus creation, lesson planning, and formative assessment practices
Proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint

Preferred Qualifications – Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills

Earned Bachelor’s degree
AWS Certification as a welding instructor and as a Certified Welding Inspector.
Familiarity with AWS Certification, Canadian Welding Board (CWB) certifications.
Background and/or experience in machining, CNC, PlasmaCam software and equipment, Robotic Welding equipment and processes.
Experience with online learning management systems (Brightspace, Blackboard, etc.).
Knowledge of Banner software.

Physical Demands

Must be able to supervise 16-20 welders in an industrial environment (noise, dust, fumes, and heat). Must be able to lift up to 30 lbs.

The Program

The Welding Technology certificate program is a nine-month program designed to prepare students for full-time employment in the welding industry. There are opportunities for graduates in welding shops, construction companies, oil companies, the military, maintenance and repair welding on heavy equipment, shipbuilding, and production welding in manufacturing of automobiles, aircraft, electronics and metal products.

MSUN provides a unique blend of program offerings in the Trades Department including carpentry, electrical, plumbing, and welding technology.
